Teenage Fanclub fans from around the world release charity tribute album

Fans of the band Teenage Fanclub have come together to record cover versions of b-sides, rarities and deep cuts from across the band's extensive back catalogue.

Known affectionately as the Teenage Fanclub Fanclub, an online community that stemmed from an old message board on the bands website have created two volumes of songs that have now been released online via Winnetka Records, a small record label based in Nottingham.

From Australia to America, Argentina to Slovakia and Japan to the band's native Scotland, love for the band shone through in recordings submitted.

Mark Rolfe from Winnetka Records said; “It is an absolute privilege to be releasing this wonderful second volume of Fanclub covers on my little record label. Teenage Fanclub fans really support each other and help each other out with tickets, gig buddying and the good nature and humour of the band tends to be reflected in the fans. The songs of Norman, Raymond and Gerry have found their way across the world. Now we have fans from around the world sending them back.”

Mark added; “We released the first volume at the start of November and I;m mazed that it has been downloaded 160 times and streamed an incredible 2,500 times. We ask everyone who downloads to make a donation to the homeless charity Simon Community Scotland who run services in the band's native West of Scotland and we have raised over £1,000!”

Murray Easton, who runs the blog Everything Flows Glasgow, came up with the idea for the album. Murray said; “In addition to being a brilliant band, Teenage Fanclub have passionate and talented fans all around the world. I’ve made friends with really interesting people, meeting up at gigs and having online chats. The love and care in these recordings from all around the world really highlights how far the songs have travelled and what they mean to people. Fanclub b-sides are a treasure trove and we have some real gems on this album. Fanclub originals and covers of songs by the likes of The Beatles, The Velvet Underground and Alex Chilton that the band recorded for b-sides. ”

Tom Burgess who assisted with the album said; “A few years ago the Teenage Fanclub Fanclub came together via the power of the internet and modern technology to record Norman’s beautiful song ‘Broken’. That is now being released as part of volume 2 in February. It has been amazing to hear how everyone has recorded their tributes in bedrooms, garages and studios all over the world. Thank you to everyone involved.”

What They Do To Me volumes 1 and 2 are available to download for free from the Winnetka Records Bandcamp page. winnetkarecords.bandcamp.com

Mark said; “We discovered that there are a lot of rules and regulations to follow when releasing an album of covers. We had thought about printing a run of CD’s but in the end we decided to make the album available for free.”

“People who stream/download are being asked to make a donation to the charity Simon Community Scotland who provide safe places and support for people experiencing homelessness. The charity has 4 supported accommodation services in the Teenage Fanclub’s native Lanarkshire, as well as an extensive outreach project. Hopefully this album, and all the time people have put into their recordings, can make a difference.”
